Accessibility

We are working on a continuous improvement plan to ensure full access to the museum for everyone. In this section we will be updating the different advances in Accessibility.

As of today, the Museum’s accessibility status is as follows:

General information

FREE ENTRY

People with an accredited disability have free entry (€0) to the museum.

INFORMATION DESK

In the entrance hall there is an information desk where the staff provides information on all the museum’s services, spaces and programme. The counter has an adapted area.

LOCKERS

The locker service is located in the tent, where backpacks and other items can be stored.

We offer groups the option of storing the bags or backpacks they bring in lockers or chests in the same space.

RESTING AREAS

On each floor there is a seating area with benches.

Folding chairs are available at the reception, on the 1st floor and on the 2nd floor.

WIFI

We offer free wifi without password.

PHYSICAL ACCESSIBILITY

All rooms are fully accessible (except the didactic classroom).

STREET ACCESS

The main entrance to the museum is via stairs. Handrails are installed to assist in ascending the steps. There is an accessible entrance located on Artekale Street. It is accessible via a lift. All of the museum’s circulation areas, however, are accessible.

LIFT

We have a lift with capacity for 4 people with numbering and a visual and Braille directory, but there are no sound indications.

The lift to the Museum is located in Artekalea Street. The telephone number to be called is indicated so that the museum staff can open it to the outside.

TOILET FACILITIES

There are accessible toilets on the reception floor and in the temporary exhibition (basement) with a sink inside the bathroom.

BABY CHANGING TABLE

The adapted toilet in the shop has a baby changing table, a nappy bin and a sink in the front room.

FOLDING CHAIRS

Folding chairs are available at the reception, on the 1st floor and on the 2nd floor.

WHEELCHAIRS

Wheelchairs are available in the cloackroom.

VISUAL ACCESSIBILITY

We are currently working on removing sensory barriers in the museum.

  • The museum spaces have little contrast in some of the rooms.
  • The permanent exhibition has several rooms with glass panels, so the contrast may be insufficient or reflections may occur.
  • One room on the 1st floor (History room) has a glass floor and the contrast may be insufficient or reflections may occur. There are railings around the perimeter of this room.
  • Assistance dogs are welcome.

HEARING ACCESSIBILITY

To make the museum’s first audiovisual,Begoña’s house”, more accessible, we offer a transcription of the full text in video.

The videos are hosted here:

At the entrance of the audiovisual room there are QR codes that redirect to the videos of the transcriptions.

The other two audiovisuals have subtitles: the one called In Memoriam is located at the end of the tour on the 1st floor; the second of the testimonies is located on the 2nd floor. The latter offers subtitles in Basque and Spanish or English and French, depending on when you enter the room, as the video is looped.

INTELLECTUAL ACCESSIBILITY

The museum route is marked with yellow arrows and the exit with black arrows.

The first audiovisual (Begoña’s house) is completely closed, which can cause the sensation of claustrophobia.

WEB ACCESIBILITY

What is accessibility?

Accessibility consists of unlimited access to the information by any person, irrespective of the sensorial, physical or technical disability.

They are many people who access the information on our website from very different contexts to our own.

We can have users who:

  • Use voice translators, Braille, without sound card or use browsers in text mode.
  • Find it difficult to make out colours, users with black and white systems.
  • Are visually impaired that have to amplify the letter on a website.
  • Dyslexics.
  • Have motor function difficulties, who are not able to interact with moving objects.
  • Who cannot use the mouse.
  • Who have old-fashioned browsers, or very new but not popular, or who have disabled services on their browser.
  • Have cognitive problems.

In short, accessibility is not only of interest for the disabled, but also improves access to the website in general.

Gernika Peace Museum Accessibility Policy.

Our accessibility guidelines are as follows:

  • We have based our work on the application of and compliance with the accessibility guidelines or General Principles of Accessible Design established by the WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative) Working Group of the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium).
  • Visual Design. This website uses layers and cascade style sheets (CSS) for the visual formatting of the information. Based on HTML5 standards for the source code of the website and CSS3, which achieve a maximum separate between presentation and contents.
