Workshop

Scavenger hunt: Gernika, a place of remembrance

Presentation

Get ready to explore the streets of Gernika like never before: by travelling back in time to discover what happened in 1937 and why it remains so important to remember it today. Through this experience, you will learn about the events that shaped an entire generation and understand how historical memory helps us interpret the present day and recognise the challenges that still exist in our society.

Language

Basque, Spanish, French and English.

Remarks

Pupils will need to have a minimum knowledge of the Spanish Civil War.

Objectives

  • Promoting historical memory.
  • To raise awareness of key facts surrounding the bombing of Gernika.
  • To highlight places of interest in Gernika related to the bombing.
  • To respectfully share history using play as a tool.
  • To meet the witnesses who lived through the bombing of Gernika and give them the importance they deserve.
Steps
  • The game starts and ends in front of the museum.
  • Certain locations will be marked on the map; at some of these, there will be several boxes or objects.
  • Each group will have its own boxes. The location of the boxes differs from the padlock codes, so each group will have to focus on their own and copying what
other groups are doing won’t help them.
  • Each group’s boxes will be identified by number and colour.
  • Inside and outside the boxes, there will be various objects and clues. These will only be used once. Sometimes you will need to use these objects at the place where you found them; at other times,
however, you will need to use them later on.
  • The entire route must be completed within a set time limit, for which stopwatches will be provided to track the time remaining until the end.
