Gernika, a city dedicated to remembrance
The Gernika Peace Museum launches the ”Memoritour Gernika” program, consisting of several guided tours in which the memorial, symbolic, historical and cultural heritage of the town is shown.
Fancy joining a guided tour of Gernika this summer?
This guided tour (Memoritour Gernika) is aimed at individuals who wish to learn about the history of Gernika in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The aim of the tour is, on the one hand, to understand how and why the air-raid shelters in Gernika were built. In this way, we will see how the town’s inhabitants experienced the bombing, a situation that is unfortunately being repeated today in many countries around the world. On the other hand, we will attempt to explain how Franco’s regime drove the reconstruction of Gernika in an effort to impose a specific ideology that would underpin the official narrative. Finally, we will look at the circumstances in which Picasso painted ‘Guernica’ and the impact that this painting had and continues to have today.
Please arrive at the museum reception at least 10 minutes before your tour begins.
The tour starts outside the Gernika Peace Museum and includes visits to landmarks such as the disappeared shelter in Andra Mari street, Adolfo Urioste street, the Pasileku and its shelters, Astra , “Guernica” the mural, the market, Agonia de fuego, etc.
From 1 July to 28 August de 2026.
