2025-01-28 - 2025-06-30

Presentation

As a result of the Spanish Civil War, thousands of children fled abroad, leaving their families behind. Many of them were able to return at the end of the war, but many others suffered decades of exile.

The exhibition The Exile of Children is a bibliographic exhibition comprising a selection of books on children’s exile.

The most outstanding books are Jesús Alonso Carballés1937, los niños vascos evacuados a Francia y Bélgica, which studies the exodus of more than 26,000 Basque children to France and Belgium in 1937, and which includes photographs, maps and lists of the exiles. Books such as the one by Gregorio Arrien ¡Salvad a los niños! Historia del exilio vasco en Gran Bretaña, 1937-1940 or the comic recently published by Begoña Garrido and Oskar Gorroño, Memorias del exilio: los niños vascos del 37.

The books on display here form part of the collection of the Documentation Centre on the Bombing of Gernika where they can be consulted by anyone interested in them.
