The Bombing of Gernika

1998-01-03 - 2002-01-03

Presentation

This was the central and principal exhibition in the Gernika Museum (between 1998 and 2001, before the complete renewal of the permanent exhibition of the museum took place (2002).

The aim of this exhibition is to offer one a historical view of events on that date, 26 April 1937, when the symbolic and pacific town of Gernika was bombed and completely destroyed.

Thirty-five panels, divided into 8 sections:

    1. Between the reality and the symbol
    2. International fascism against Euskadi
    3. The experimental horror
    4. The death of Gernika
    5. The abduction of Gernika
    6. The myth is born
    7. The reconstruction
    8. The sketches and ‘Guernica’ of Picasso

These are accompanied by photograph of the period and scale models. Books on the subject recreate in the mind of the visitor the bombing that occurred on that market Monday and encourage him to value how terrible was that attack against an open and defenceless town.
