The Bombing of Basque Literature

2023-04-25 - 2023-12-28

Presentation

In recent years, censorship has been the subject of debate on an international level. Many thinkers have criticised the traditional focus of censorship as a measure against freedom of expression, which is limited to specific repressive measures by institutions created officially and expressly for that purpose, elimination or deletion, and totalitarian social organisations.

Within the framework of the innovative vision of New Censorship Theory, censorship is an integral part of communication and, with regard to powerful institutions, eliminatory repressive measures are no more than the smallest evident part of censorship. Furthermore, censorship not only eliminates, but also produces and facilitates. So, in the words of Nicole Moore: “To be for or against censorship as such is to assume a freedom no one has. Censorship is. What we can do is differentiate between its more and less repressive effects ”.

Indeed, the aim of the “The Bombing of Basque Literature” project is to create an opportunity to focus on the intensity of the many limits and controls that, for centuries, have been imposed on writings, discourse and culture in the Basque language.
