Presentation

Republic! Posters and poster-makers (1931-1939) is an invitation to look back to the Second Republic and the Civil War, as part of the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the proclamation of the regime on 14 April.

The exhibition provides a selection from the substantial collection at Barcelona University’s Republic Library, with contributions from the Figueras Foundation and the International Historical Studies Centre.

Political posters were one of the most effective propaganda tools of the 1930s, as were newspapers and the radio. They were one of the foremost ideological weapons used by both right and left. The posters were produced by all manner of institutions, political parties and organisations, and conveyed effective messages to thousands of people on a daily basis. They now constitute exceptional testimony of intense social and political activity, and also point to the new artistic trends emerging in such a decisive decade of 20th century history.
