Prisons and Francoism

As part of its cultural activities, the Documentation Centre on the Bombing of Gernika organises bibliographic exhibitions to disseminate its collection of books.

On this occasion we present a selection of books on Prisons and Francoism. During the Civil War and the subsequent Franco dictatorship, the prisons were filled with political prisoners and people considered enemies. Conditions were extremely harsh, with overcrowding, hunger and disease. In addition, forced labor sentences and executions were applied to sow fear in the population. Thus, the prisons became a symbol of the control and violence exercised on the political opponents of the Regime.

All the exposed documents are preserved in the deposits of the Documentation Center and are available for consultation.
