PERMANENT EXHIBITION

Fernando Hierro. The history of Gernika in Watercolours.

1998-01-02 - 2001-12-31

Presentation

This exhibition shows us a historical view of Gernika, starting with the 1st century and leading up to the Gernika of the 20th century before the bombing.

The visitor is offered the chance to go back in time to the beginnings of Gernika, on the summit of Mt Kosnoaga, and to know about the passage of the Romans through this area of Urdaibai, which has access to the sea, and was one of the places through which one passed to access the Road to Santiago.

In later watercolours the visitor can see the founding of Gernika by Count D. Tello on 28 April 1366 and its structure as a town in the Middle Ages; the sworn commitment to its Laws by the Kings of Castilla under the Tree of Gernika; the annexing of Gernika and Lumo (19th c.) and the structure of the town in the late 19th c. and early 20th. The final watercolour is a reference to market Monday, 26 April 1937, the day of the bombing.
