Temporary exhibition’s opening:
The Maternity Hospital at Elna
Next thursday, 16 June, will be the opening of the new temporary exhibition, ‘The Maternity Hospital at Elna. Cradles in exile.’ that will be at the Gernika Peace Museum until 12 October.
This temporary exhibition, produced by the Memorial Democràtic of Catalunya, tells us the story and work of Elisabeth Eidenbenz, (who passed away some weeks ago) a Swiss schoolteacher, that between 1939 and 1944, saved the lives of 597 infants, children of exiled Spanish women living in appalling conditions at the republican refugee camps at Sant Cebrià del Rosellon, Argelers, Ribesaltes and el Barcares.
These women refugees were fortunate enough to be taken in by the maternity hospital set up by Eidenbenz at Elna, an island of peace in an ocean of destruction.
