Theatre of the Oppressed – Masterclass

From October 2017 to July 2018, the organisations Gernika Gogoratuz, the Gernika Peace Museum and the Harrobia Centre for Innovation in Stage Production organised an international training course on Theatre of the Oppressed.

To conclude this training programme, a Master Class will be organised, open to all those working in the community sector, students and professionals in the performing arts, teachers in formal and non-formal education, those working in the social sciences and humanities, and people seeking to transform conflicts in a creative way and generate spaces for coexistence through artistic languages.

Previous training in Theatre of the Oppressed is required.

THE COURSE WILL BE CONDUCTED IN ENGLISH (WITH TRANSLATION INTO SPANISH).

TRAINERS:

Sanjoy Ganguly, Sima Ganguly (founding members of Jana Sanskriti, India) and Birgit Fritz (founder of the Theatre of the Oppressed platform in Vienna, Austria).

MASTER CLASS: 200 € – 150 € for unemployed persons and students (prices already include a 75% subsidy)

FORMING EQUIPMENT:

Sanjoy and Sima Ganguly are founding members of Jana Sanskriti. India 1985. They are a historic group that uses theatre as a tool for popular education, community mobilisation and direct political action. They represent the most important and longest-running experiment in the world of Theatre of the Oppressed outside Brazil. They have over 30 years of experience. They work on issues such as social injustice, domestic violence, racism, sexism, patriarchy, poverty, corruption, and the caste system. Their work has inspired many Theatre of the Oppressed groups around the world.

Birgit Fritz: theatre activist, drama teacher, researcher and practitioner of Theatre of the Oppressed. Founder of the Theatre of the Oppressed platform in Vienna (Austria). Collaborator at the Jana Sanskriti Theatre of the Oppressed Centre and the Jana Sanskriti International Institute for Research and Resources in Kolkata, India. Facilitator of contextual projects through the Theatre of the Oppressed in Senegal, Kyrgyzstan, India and Germany.

During these days of meetings, the following topics will be addressed:

  • Theory meets practice.
  • Writing the play instead of performing it.
  • North meets South.
  • What we can learn from the experience of Jana Sanskriti: interpretations, activities, games, and techniques.
