Ibero-American School of Mediation in Sites and Museums of Memory, 5th edition

2025-05-19 - 2025-06-09

Presentation

On 19 and 26 May, and 2 and 9 June, the 5th edition of the Ibero-American School of Mediation in Sites and Museums of Memory (EME School) took place, co-organised by the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago, Chile; the Museum of Memory in Rosario, Argentina; the Gernika Peace Museum (Spain); and the Museum of the Memorial of 68 – University Cultural Centre (Mexico City, Mexico).

The first day began with a panel discussion entitled ‘Didactics of Memory,’ featuring specialists in this field from different countries: María Celeste Adamoli (Argentina); Naira Vicent (Basque Country-Spain); María Soledad Jiménez (Chile); and Jenny Díaz Muñoz (Colombia).

The themes of the following sessions were: ‘Approaching memory through alternative mediation processes’; ‘From an artistic point of view: How can we prevent the transmission of the past from becoming crystallised in sites of memory?’ and ‘How can we accommodate the collective struggles of the present in our sites?’ These three sessions followed the same format: first, a series of workshops, and second, a presentation of brief experiences related to the corresponding themes.

Every day, opening and closing activities were held to help students, organisers, exhibitors and workshop leaders get to know each other, and as a relaxed way of evaluating the progress of the EME School. The school aims to contribute to the training of mediators, educators and workers with audiences at museums and memorial sites in the theoretical and practical approach to content relevant to working in these places. Its objectives are educational, communicative, reflective, awareness-raising, and recreational. It aims to exchange experiences and build networks between different spaces and mediators so that the work can be multiplied and enriched. Once again, we can say that these objectives are being achieved year after year and that the proposals and contributions of both those of us who convene as organisers and those who enrol as students make this School grow and strengthen.
