Picasso and the “Guernica”
The Gernika Peace Museum launches the ”Memoritour Gernika’‘ program, consisting of several guided tours in which the memorial, symbolic, historical and cultural heritage of the town is shown.
The ”Guernica” is not a war painting. We cannot see weapons, armies or planes in it, and yet it is a work that has become a symbol of peace. Its visual strength, derived from Picasso’s creative passion, has also made it become an art icon.
Besides knowing how and why it was painted, we will take several figures from the canvas and relate them to different events that occurred during the bombing. In this way, not only will we immerse ourselves in Picasso’s creative process, but we will also experience some aspects of the air attack that may well have influenced the realization of the painting.
Please arrive at the museum reception at least 10 minutes before your tour begins.
The tour starts outside the Gernika Peace Museum and visits the sculpture by George Steer, Andra Mari Street, the train station and the ‘Guernica’ mural.
From 27 January to 30 June 2026 and from 1 September to 29 December 2026.
10.15 am, 11.30 am y 12.45 pm
