The forgotten dream of Gernika Berri
The exhibition “GURS: The frustrated dream of Gernika Berri” aims to raise awareness of what happened in the ” Camp d’Accueil” of Gurs after the end of the Spanish Civil War and the exodus of the retreat. Thousands of people were interned in the Béarn camp of Gurs after their previous passage through the beaches-camps of Le Barcares, St Cyprien and Argèles sur Mer, where the “Gernika Berri” camp was set up, bringing together thousands of Basque refugees.
Throughout the five sections of this exhibition (Introduction, The retreat, Gernika Berri, Gurs: from reception to extermination, Gurs: from memories of death to memorial site) and the panel of names, the visitor will be able to discover a rather unknown page of our recent history.

The Gurs’ Camp
Between 1939 and 1945, the Gurs camp was one of the largest internment camps in France.
Around 64,000 people from different populations were interned there: Spanish nationals (spring and summer 1939), “undesirables” (May – July 1940), Jews (October 1940 – November 1943), Gypsies (spring 1944)…
