The American embassy in San Juan de Luz generated abundant documentation for the State Department in relation to the Basque political and military situation during the entire chronological period covered by the War in the Basque Country.

  • Correspondence between the American ambassador in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Claude G. Bowers, and members of the Basque Government. Correspondence between Agirre and Roosevelt, among others.
  • Documentation relating to the investigation into the kidnapping and murder of the Basque nationalist Jesús Galíndez.
  • Records of the German Foreign Office received by the Department of State

The staff of the Documentation Centre on the Bombing of Gernika (CDBG), continuing with the research work on the Bombing of Gernika and the Spanish Civil War, will investigate at Roosevelt Archives, New York University and Columbia University.

Research at Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Archive (Hide Park-New York)
Documentation on the Civil War and the bombing of Gernika, especially correspondence. Of particular note in this respect are the collections of the President’s Secretariat and those relating to Basque refugees.

Research at Tamiment Library (New York University)
The Alba (Abraham Lincoln Brigade Archive) collection is particularly noteworthy, with a wealth of correspondence on the Civil War and photographs.

Research at Columbia University
The documents relating to Lehendakari Agirre’s stay at Columbia University as a history professor are also of particular interest.

Research in the National Archives of Washington: an important document collection on the Spanish Civil War in Euskadi (Basque Country) composed by documents generated by the U.S. Embassy in Donibane Lohitzune (Saint Jean de Luz, France) and by the Consulate of Bilbao as well as other Spanish consulates (Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Sevilla, Valencia and Vigo).
