The Economy for the Common Good (ECG) is built on the foundation of relationships: trust, responsibility, respect, democracy, solidarity and cooperation. This economic model proposes an ethical transformation, replacing competitiveness and financial gain—as the primary criteria for success—with contribution to the Common Good and cooperation. To this end, the EBC has created a measurement tool, the Common Good Balance Sheet 4.0, consisting of a matrix that links basic rights and duties (supposedly enshrined in all constitutions) – human dignity, solidarity, ecological sustainability, social justice and democracy – with the groups involved in a company: workers, suppliers, customers, financiers, and the social and environmental context. In this sense, the aim of this model is to establish a binding legal framework for the creation of business and individual values oriented towards the common good. Some of the core values of EBC are: the use of financial surplus; the removal of competitive pressure; cooperation and solidarity with other businesses; the limitation of income and wealth disparities; the democratisation and co-ownership of large companies; democratic assets; the democratic bank; global monetary cooperation; the de-commodification of nature; reducing the ecological footprint; reducing paid working hours; the ‘sabbatical year’; the development of democracy; or social management skills.

From the Artivist Sailing, and in our endeavour to bring together art and social action, or to highlight social ‘creactions’ that address the social and environmental challenges of our time, this is our second exploration of the economy. Last June we explored various creative initiatives centred on the Blue Economy; and we now do so from this other paradigm, the Economy for the Common Good. These are two significant examples of the many alternatives to financial capitalism that currently governs human interactions and relationships. Economic alternatives with a re-founding, reformist or disruptive intent, such as the Collaborative-Sharing Economy, Sumak Yachay or the free knowledge and open-source commons, the Circular Economy, the Regenerative Economy, the Social and Solidarity Economy, the Feminist Economy, the Transitional Economy, or Degrowth, amongst others, which may well set the course for future ‘Sailings’.
