1st edition of the Artivist Sailing. Stitching the Search

Working day due to the opening of the temporary exhibition STITCHING PEACE: Conflict, Arpilleras, Memory.

The seminar aims to reflect on, share, explore and critically examine the experiences of victims of various forms of violence (terrorist, state-sponsored, gender-based, etc.) in different parts of the world, as well as the search for the disappeared and its impact on personal and everyday life, society and state policies regarding the pursuit of truth, reparation and mental health.

Whilst there are extensive studies and experiences relating to truth-seeking processes, the lived experience of survivors of human rights violations and the impact of the search for the disappeared has not been widely studied and/or documented.

This seminar will be approached from different disciplines (psychological, social, cultural…) and will centre on an exhibition of arpilleras and other textiles that bear witness to, act as a form of resistance, denounce, and document human rights violations in conflict situations. The seminar’s title is based on the quilt that chronicles 40 years of searching for Jaqueline Drouilly, who was detained and disappeared in Chile along with her husband and who was pregnant at the time of her disappearance. In a recent account, her sister Nicole, who designed, sewed and documented the textile, said: “Over the years we have lived with her absence, which carries a weight equivalent to her presence.”

The collection of patchwork quilts and other textile pieces in this exhibition comes from Northern Ireland, England, Spain, Chile, Peru, Argentina, Zimbabwe, Germany and Colombia. In these works, women recount their experiences in contexts of conflict and human rights abuses, using everyday household materials such as needles, thread and scraps of fabric.
