Visit of the President of Germany to Gernika

On 28 November 2025, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier honoured the victims of the bombing during his official visit to Gernika, where he visited the Cemetery and the Gernika Peace Museum.

Steinmeier made a historic visit of profound symbolism by becoming the first German head of state to visit Gernika, which was devastated by the bombing of the German Condor Legion and the Italian Legionary Air Force on 26 April 1937.

Among the places visited, we highlight the visit to our museum, the Gernika Peace Museum, where its director, Iratxe Momoitio Astorkia, guided them through the various rooms.

The King of Spain, Felipe VI, and the Lehendakari (Basque President) Pradales also participated in the commemoration ceremony, along with many other authorities and institutional representatives.
