Basque Children’s Exile
During the Spanish Civil War, thousands of Basque children fled abroad, leaving their families. Many of them returned at the end of the war but many others suffered decades of exile.
The exhibition Basque Children’s Exile is a bibliographic exhibition that consists on a selection of books about the basque exile.
There are some important books like 1937, los niños vascos evacuados a Francia y Bélgica by Jesús Alonso Carballés, studying the exodus of more than 26,000 Basque children in France and Belgium in 1937, and includes photographs, maps and the list of exiled people. Another book writen by Gregorio Arrien Niños vascos evacuados en 1937: álbum histórico
with 666 photographs of the evacuations and the summer camps in France, Great Britain, Belgium and the USSR.
The books presented here are part of the funds of the Documentation Centre on the Bombing of Gernika where they can be consulted by all those interested in them.
