The exhibition Essential books on the bombing of Gernika is a bibliographic exhibition that consists on a selection of books about the bombing of Gernika.
Being all relating to the bombing of Gernika belong to different authors who have wanted to write the story of what happened in Gernika that 26th April 1937, and doing so from different points of view and emphasizing different aspects. From Herbert Southworth with his book The Destruction of Guernica: journalism, diplomacy, propaganda and history (1977), which contributed significantly to the elucidation of the facts, to those who thrive on the testimony of witnesses like Mary Jesus Cava Mesa Memoria colectiva del bombardeo (1996) or the newly released book of William Smallwood, The day Gernika was bombed: A story told by witnesses and survivors (2012).
Also deserving special mention those that reveal new information about the nature and consequences of the bombing thanks to the discovery of new documents, such as Xabier Irujo’s book El Gernika de Richthofen: Un ensayo de bombardeo de terror (2012) or those that go past and focus on the impact of the bombing raised internationally as published by the Gernika Peace Museum Foundation recently El bombardeo de Gernika y su repercusión internacional (2012).
The books presented here are part of the funds of the Documentation Centre on the Bombing of Gernika where they can be consulted by all those interested in them.
