Gernika Awards for Peace and Reconciliation 2025

The town halls of Gernika-Lumo and Pforzheim, the Gernika Peace Museum, the Gernika Culture Centre and Gernika Gogoratuz organize the GERNIKA PEACE AND RECONCILIATION AWARD that award the work of two people or organizations, be they national or international, that stand out for their work in favour of peace and reconciliation.

AWARDS 2025

The winners of the 20th Gernika Peace and Reconciliation Awards 2025 are:

• António Guterres, the current UN Secretary-General, was born in Lisbon in 1949 and has devoted his life to public service. Before assuming his role at the United Nations in 2017, he served as Prime Minister of Portugal, President of the Socialist International, and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. During his tenure at UNHCR (2005–2015), he confronted unprecedented humanitarian crises, including the Syrian exodus, championing a globally coordinated humanitarian response. As Secretary-General, his leadership has been defined by his steadfast advocacy for multilateralism, climate action, and the rights of displaced persons.
• The Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF), is a pioneering organization dedicated to investigating crimes against humanity through forensic science. Founded in 1984, its initial mission was to uncover the truth behind the forced disappearances during Argentina’s dictatorship (1976–1983). Its methodology, rooted in forensic anthropology, has been instrumental in identifying victims of human rights violations across more than 50 countries, including Bosnia, Angola, East Timor, and Kosovo. Beyond solving past crimes, its work has contributed to the establishment of international standards in forensic investigations related to crimes against humanity.
